16 Best Folding Bikes 2021

Need a bike that’s compact and easy to store? If so, you’re probably in the market for one of the best folding bikes.

In this article I’ll show you everything you need to know when making your selection and my top picks for the year. By the time you’re done I’m sure you’ll see a product that you love and want to purchase.

How To Choose A Folding Bike

When making a purchase make sure to consider the following:

  • Look at your needs and where you expect to bike
  • How easy the bike is to fold and transport
  • Smaller features (gears, tire, frame, brakes)

First and most importantly, you have to look at your own needs and choose a product that best suits them. For example, someone looking to commute with their new folding bike in a city or on a college campus will want a different product than someone mountain biking.

Commuters won’t need a bike with large wheels and a lot of gears. Someone expecting to face large inclines and declines will need larger tires (20 inches and more) and a bike with multiple gears – some folding mountain bikes come with over 20 gears while a commuter version may only come with a few or just one gear.

After that, you should look at how easy the bike is to transport and to fold. This is especially true if you live in a small apartment and expect to take your new bike onto the bus, subway or into your place of work. If that’s you, you’ll need a product that folds quickly and into a nice compact package. This way you won’t take up a ton of space.

There’s smaller things to consider like tires, materials used and suspension. Again, your needs will dictate each of these. There’s even bikes that have a built in battery and motor that helps with pedaling.

Now that you know what to look for let’s take a look at my top picks now:

Dahon Mariner D8

Company: Dahon

Price: $$$$

Rating: 4.9/5

The Dahon Mariner D8 is one of the most popular folding bikes on the market and is a product that everyone should consider. This bike is universally loved and will deliver in every way imaginable for you.

One thing I really like about this product is how lightweight and easy to transport it is. The Mariner D8 only weighs 27 pounds and you’ll be able to carry it around without any problems. Plus, it won’t take up a lot of space in your apartment or on the bus, subway or office.

Some other top features include:

  • Well made 8 speed Shimano shifter allows you to tackle various terrains. You’ll be able to climb hills more easily because of this.
  • Aluminum frame is why this product doesn’t weigh a lot and it makes the Mariner D8 weather resistant. You won’t have to worry about this bike rusting up.
  • 20 inch wheel make riding long distances much more comfortable and they provide a good amount of stability.
  • Adjustable seat and handle bar means this product is good for people of various heights and sizes.

This video goes a little deeper:

As you can see this bike is awesome!

The best part is the Dahon Mariner is pretty affordable and you won’t have to completely break the bank to purchase. If you want to see how well it’s priced, click below:

Vilano Urbana

Company: Vilano

Price: $$$

Rating: 4.7/5

If you’re looking for a product to go off trail or mountain biking, you should look elsewhere. The Vilano Urbana is meant for the city and college campuses – everything about this bike is designed to thrive in urban, flat environments.

One reason for this is the Urbana is only single speed. A single speed bike would have an extremely hard time going up a steep hill but is perfectly fine on a city street.

If you’re ok with that you’ll like that this product:

  • Only weighs a very reasonable 21 pounds and this means basically everyone will be able to easily carry it around.
  • Quickly folds up and it folds into a very compact package. It’ll take up virtually no space in your apartment.
  • Aluminum frame won’t rust up, even if it’s left out in the rain.
  • Easy to assemble and you won’t need a ton of mechanical experience to get this product road ready.

The Urbana is also one of the most affordable bikes on this list too. For all that you’re getting you’re going to be pretty surprised at how cheap this product is.

Montague Paratrooper Pro

Company: Montague

Price: $$$$$

Rating: 4.9/5

The Montague Paratrooper Pro is a bike that doesn’t mess around. I’ve heard some people describe this product as a tank that folds as easy as a Swiss army knife and I agree with that – this bike can handle anything and the DirectConnect folding systems makes owing this bike very convenient.

The Paratrooper Pro can work in the city and for commutes but it’s mainly made for long rides and rough terrain. It can climb hills with a breeze, absorb all shocks from bumpy roads and is extremely stable.

If that’s not enough the Paratrooper Pro also features:

  • 27 different speeds which is why this product can get up hills so easily. In fact, you’ll have a hard time finding another folding bike that can tackle hills better.
  • Oversized 26 inch Kenda tires can handle slick surfaces and the off road. You’ll be able to ride with confidence with these tires underneath you.
  • Well made suspension that smooths out bumpy rides.
  • Comes with disc brakes that most people consider to be the best kinds of brakes. You’ll be able to stop on a dime with these installed to your bike.

Looking at this bike you might think it weighs a ton but that’s not the case. It’s actually pretty lightweight at 31 pounds. The type of person that would want or need this bike would easily be able to carry that around.

This bike is expensive, however, and is one of the more pricier products on this list. If you have extra to spend this year and plan on riding on some pretty extreme terrain you should definitely consider. The Paratrooper is in a class of its own and is a bike you will thoroughly love owning.

Schwinn Loop

Company: Schwinn

Price: $$$

Rating: 4.7/5

Schwinn has been in the bike making business since 1895. You think they’ve learned a thing or two about producing bikes in that time period? They have in case you’re wondering.

Their Loop folding bike isn’t the best on this list but it is one of the best values. It’s extremely affordable and comes at a price that basically everyone can afford – even if you’re on a tight budget.

You even can tackle a bunch of different terrains with the Loop too because of the 7 gears you get. This means you’ll get up inclines pretty easily. This is perfect if you live in a hilly city or area.

Other aspects that you’ll like includes:

  • Pant guard prevents dirt and mud from getting onto your clothes. This feature is perfect if you’re commuting to work and don’t want to look bad.
  • Rear rack lets you bring your suitcase or book bag along for the ride. You can put groceries and other bags on their too.
  • 20 inch wheels keep you sturdy and can roll over potholes and manhole covers.
  • Aluminum frame is long lasting and it won’t rust or break down.

Even though this product is extremely affordable it comes with a lifetime warranty. That’s Schwinn craftsmanship for you.

Ancheer Folding Electric Bike

Company: Ancheer

Price: $$$$

Rating: 4.8/5

I really like this Ancheer Folding bike for many reasons. The thing that separates this product from the other ones on this list is it’s an electric bike (you can check out my favorite e-bikes here). This means it has a built in rechargeable battery that assists in the pedaling process.

This pedal assist feature means you won’t strain yourself as much as you usually would. It helps you reach higher speeds too (up to 15 MPH and you can get up to 35 miles of battery power too).

Some other nice features include:

  • 100 percent aluminum alloy frame makes this bike extremely durable and you won’t have to worry about it rusting. The front fork is made from carbon steel and this absorbs bumps.
  • Quickly folds and this saves you a ton of stress
  • LED headlight ensures you can see in the dark and other cars will be able to see you which is good for safety.
  • This product is made for both cities, suburbs and mountain riding.
  • Is relatively lightweight and with all things included (frame and battery) this bike weighs around 45 pounds.
  • Disc brakes are top of the line and gives you the most stopping power possible.

Even though this Ancheer product has all these features it really isn’t going to cost too much. If you want to see how much it’s going to cost, click below:

EuroMini Campo

Company: Euromini

Price: $$

Rating: 4.7/5

The EuroMini Campo is a budget friendly bike that works well for commuters. Do I think it’s going to perform like some of the more pricier products on this list? Not really. But not everyone needs top of the line. Some people just want a simple bike to get to work with or to run errands with.

If that’s you the EuroMini Campo will work well for you. It’s perfect for people that plan on hopping onto the subway or on a bus during their commute. The Campo only weighs around 28 pounds and folds into a compact package that’s easy to carry.

You’ll also like that it comes with:

  • V-Brakes aren’t the best but they’ll keep you safe and allow you to stop on a dime.
  • Aluminum frame is rust resistant and looks good for a long time.
  • 7 speeds help you when you’re facing inclines and declines – this is good if you live in a hilly area like San Francisco.
  • Completely adjustable and no matter your height you can adjust this product to fit you perfectly.
  • Wands tires are good on different terrains and they won’t slip all over the place.

So how much is it actually going to cost? It’s very affordable. As long as you’re not planning on going off road or anything like that, the Campo will do a good job for you.

Stowabike MTB V2

Company: Stowabike

Price: $$

Rating: 4.7/5

Looking for a budget friendly folding mountain bike? Look no further than the Stowabike MTB V2. The MTB V2 isn’t the most high quality but in the right situations it’ll be a serviceable bike.

The reason this product works so well for mountain biking is it has 18 different gears. That means you’ll be able to get up and down hills fairly easily. You can even use this bike in cities and for commuting too – it’s pretty versatile.

Some other top features include:

  • A reasonable weight and it weighs around 38 pounds. This isn’t the lightest on the list but it’s pretty good for a mountain bike.
  • Steel fork soaks up bumps and vibrations. This leads to a smooth and comfortable ride.
  • 26 inch wheels will keep you nice and sturdy, even if you’re going off rocks and roots.
  • V-brakes are good quality and improves the overall safety of this bike.

This MTB V2 is another product that you can find for a reasonable price. It gets pretty mixed reviews on Amazon with some people loving it while others not so much. If you’d like to check out what other customers are saying about this product, click below:

Company: COGHORN

Price: $$$$

Rating: 4.8/5

The COGHOURN Sailor is a bike that I really like and is a product that really works well in cities, college campuses and for commuters. I personally love the look and design of this bike and I know you will too – it may even get you a few compliments through out the day.

Unlike a lot of city bikes the Sailor actually comes with multiple gears (7) and this helps if there’s any hills in your daily commute. You won’t have to kill yourself on every decline because of this.

If that’s not enough you’ll like that this product comes with:

  • Adjustable seat and handle bar means you can get a custom ride and feel comfortable no matter your height.
  • Upright ride is good for your back and limits the strain on your back.
  • Rust Buster chain is long lasting and you won’t have to worry about rain decaying it.
  • Reflectors through out the bike ensures cars will see you even if it’s dark out.
  • 20 inch wheels are nice and strudy and you’ll be able to smoothly ride everywhere you go.

The Sailor isn’t exactly cheap but the price isn’t bad either. If you decide on this product you’ll really like what you get and you’ll get your money’s worth. The only people that should stay away from this bike are people that plan on going mountain biking and off trail – these riders will want something else.

Cyclamatic CX2

Company: Cyclamatic

Price: $$$$

Rating: 4.8/5

Here we have another electric folding bike and the Cyclamatic CX2 is a product that I believe everyone should consider. The CX2 is a commuters dream and it’ll help you get to your destination with the least amount of strain possible and as fast as possible – can you ask for more?

The battery you get works well too. It’ll help you get up to 15 MPH without any issues and it can go for up to 30 miles. Plus, it only takes about 4 to 6 hours to fully charge. Before you go to bed put the battery on the charger and it’ll be good to go when you wake up.

You’ll get even more, including:

  • 6 different speeds is a godsend if you have any steep hills on your route.
  • Kenda tires are top of the line and they’ll get you where you need to go as smoothly as possible. They’re slip proof too.
  • Front and rear mud guards keep you looking fresh and prevents you from getting all dirty.
  • Headlights allow you to see what’s in front of you in the dark and lets cars see you.
  • Steel frame is ultra durable and you won’t have to worry about it breaking down.

You might expect this product to cost an arm and a leg. Some people might think this bike will cost over $1000 but that’s not the case and it’ll actually cost about half of that. You’ll have a hard time finding a better bike for less. The CX2 is one of the best values on this list, that’s for sure.

DIOKO Cruiser

Company: DIOKO

Price: $$$

Rating: 4.8/5

The DIOKO Cruiser is a bike that excels in beach communities and is perfect for people that live on the west cost or anywhere near the ocean. This Cruiser may be a little clunky to ride in a dense city like NYC and isn’t really suited for mountain biking either.

This bike is built for comfort too. The seat feels good to sit on for long periods of time and you’ll be able to ride this product all day long.

Some other nice features include:

  • 7 different speeds allow you to get up steep hills and declines.
  • V-brakes aren’t the best on the market but they’re still high quality.
  • Steel materials are very strong and they won’t rust or break.
  • Basket in the front of this bike lets you bring along stuff and bring groceries home.
  •  Folds up easily and doesn’t weigh too much.

The price here is excellent too and you won’t have to spend a ton of money to own this product. As long as your needs match what this bike can do, you’ll love what you get here.

Dahon Uno

Company: Dahon

Price: $$$$

Rating: 4.8/5

The Dahon Uno is an excellent bike – for the right person. The reason this bike is called the Uno is because it only has one speed. Obviously, if you expect to face hilly terrains and want to go off-roading, you’ll need a completely different bike.

If you live in an urban environment, however, the Uno will be a product you’ll want to consider. This bike is made for the conrete jungle and is perfect for people low on space. It folds into a nice compact package and only weighs 24 pounds. Now you see why it’s perfect for cities.

Some other aspects that you’ll like includes:

  • Magnetic Latching Systems ensure this bike stays folded and won’t unexpectedly unfold when you’re carrying it.
  • Very easy to maintain and there’s no extra cables that’ll break over time.
  • Comfortable grips and made specifically to fit your hand perfectly.
  • Pedal brakes are easy to use and to stop you’ll just have to pedal backwards.
  • Adjustable seat means that almost any person, of any height can ride comfortably.
  • Fork has Fusion Technology built in which eats up bumps and vibrations. This is good for people that expect to go over a bunch pot holes and manhole covers.

This is another bike that’s not cheap but certainly isn’t overly expensive. If you do decide to purchase the Uno you’ll love its simple and minimalist design.

Vilano ION

Company: Vilano

Price: $$$$

Rating: 4.8/5

The Vilano ION is a really nice and versatile product. This is the kind of bike that people from the East Coast, West Coast, South, Midwest and Northern parts of the US will love – it’ll basically work in any international city as well.

The ION has been described as a commuter’s dream and I agree with that assessment. One reason for this is it comes with 7 speeds. This means you can ride this bike in cities and college campuses with hilly terrain as well as places with flat terrain.

Another reason is the ION is an e-bike and comes with pedal assist. You’ll be able to go faster and farther with less effort than ever before. The battery and motor will get you up to 30 miles too on a single charge.

Some other top features include:

  • Aluminum frame materials is rust proof and this product will keep its looks for as long as possible.
  • Fairly lightweight at around 45 pounds which means that most people will be able to carry around.
  • Mechanical disk brakes that are as good as you can get. These brakes ensure you’ll be able to stop on a dime and improves safety.
  • Steel rack lets you bring along your briefcase, backpack and other stuff.

Would you be all that surprised if this bike cost more than $1000? I wouldn’t. The good news? It’ll cost about half of that, which makes the ION a great deal and value. If you’re looking to get around town the easiest and least straining way possible, I would think about purchasing this bike.

Goplus Electric Mountain Bike

Company: Goplus

Price: $$$$

Rating: 4.8/5

The product you just saw was an e-bike that’s made for commuters and isn’t for people that expect to face rough terrain. But what about those that plan on mountain biking and doing a little trail riding? Where should these people turn? This Goplus electric mountain bike is a good answer.

The battery and motor on this bike are high quality and will provide a good amount of power too. You’ll be able to ride up to 30 miles on a single charge. Plus, it charges in under 6 hours. All you have to do is leave it on the charge overnight and you’ll wake up to a fully charged bike.

This bike also comes with:

  • High quality brakes ensure you stop when you want to do and you won’t skid or anything like that.
  • Top speed of 21 MPH means you’ll be cruising along with little effort.
  • Plenty of adjustments allow people of all height to ride comfortably.
  • Bike folds and unfolds extremely quickly and without any problems.
  • Aluminum frame is ultra durable and you won’t have to worry about it rusting up.

This is another product that is surprisingly cost effective too and won’t cost nearly as much as you’d expect it to. There’s nothing better in life than saving money and you’ll definitely do that if you decide on this Goplus e-bike.

HASA Folding Bike

Company: HASA

Price: $$

Rating: 4.6/5

Say you want a new folding bike to commute with and don’t have a ton of money. Where should you turn? This HASA folding bike is definitely a product that you should consider – it’s ultra affordable and you can find it for under $200.

Do I think this bike can match up to the more expensive on this list? Not really. But I do think it performs well enough that it doesn’t seem or feel cheap when you’re riding it.

Some top features include:

  • 6 speeds are ultra convenient when you’re facing hilly terrain and help you conquer inclines with less effort.
  • 20 inch Kenda tires are good when it’s wet outside and helps keep you nice and stable.
  • Comes 95% assembled which is good for the less mechanically inclined.
  • Relatively lightweight and only weighs around 34 pounds. This means most people will be able to carry it around.

Even though this bike is very budget friendly you get a lifetime warranty on the frame. That shows that the HASA believes in this product and it out performs its low price tag.

EuroMini Urbano

Company: EuroMini

Price: $$$

Rating: 4.8/5

The EuroMini Urbano is another commuter’s dream and is a bike that you’ll love if you live in any city. The reason I say this is because it’s designed to tackle everything an urban environment can throw at you – pot holes, cracks in the sidewalk, manhole covers and all other obstacles.

Also, you get an 8 speed shifter. This is good if you live in a hilly city or hilly college campus. Life is much simpler when you can get up steep inclines with the least amount of strain possible.

Some other awesome benefits include:

  • Extremely lightweight and only weighs 24 pounds. You’ll have a really hard time finding a folding bike that weighs less than that.
  • Kenda tires keep you from slipping and are perfect in almost all terrains. You’ll feel really safe with Kenda tires underneath you.
  • Adjustable seat means people of all heights can comfortably ride.
  • V-style brakes are high quality and gives you a good amount of stopping power.
  • Magnet catcher keeps this bike folded up and ensures it won’t open when you’re walking with it.

This is another bike that’s not overpriced and one that’s cost effective. Plus, it has quite a bit of high reviews on Amazon and if you’d like to check out what other customers are saying, click below:

Dahon Vybe D7

Company: Dahon

Price: $$$$

Rating: 4.8/5

Last on the list comes from a company you’ve seen a few times already – Dahon. Dahon is probably the most well known maker of folding bikes, so it’s natural you’ll see a few of their products on this list.

The Vybe D7 is one of their best bikes too and is one of the best designed in my opinion. It has a very sleek look and is a product that you’re going to love to show off.

If that’s not enough, you’ll like that the Vybe comes with:

  • 7 different speeds are very handy when you’re facing hilly terrains.
  • Folds very quickly and most people can fold it under 15 seconds.
  • Rust resistant materials ensure this bike holds onto its good looks forever.
  • Adjustable and works for many different people, regardless of height and size.

You can find this bike for pretty cheap too. Dahon makes quality bikes and if you decide on this one I know you’ll appreciate what it can do for you. It delivers in almost every way possible.

Folding Bike FAQ’S

1) Question: How much do folding bikes cost?

Answer: It really depends on the bike you get and your needs. There’s simple folding bikes that will only cost $200 to $300 and there’s more advanced ones that can cost $600, $700, and up to $1500.

For example, a minimalist bike that’s made for commuting will cost less than a mountain bike with a bunch more feature – the latter needs better suspension, better tires and better brakes.

Also, some bikes have a motor and this will cost a little extra too. If you do get an electric folding bike it can cost you over a thousand.

2) Question: Can I buy a folding bike online?

Answer: I usually think it’s a good idea to buy a bike in person so you can really check it out before making your purchase. You can see how it feels to ride, you can take a look at the tires and you can see the brakes too.

But folding bikes aren’t the most common products on earth. Even if you have a bike shop near your home, there’s a good chance it won’t carry a folding bike.

So in this case it’s perfectly acceptable to buy one online.

3) Question: Who would want a folding bike?

Answer: Honestly, everyone can benefit from one of these bikes but I’m not sure high performing athletes will want one. If you love mountain biking, will one of these folding bikes compete in terms of performance with a regular top of the line mountain bike? Probably not.

But if you’re someone that likes to mountain bike casually and just for fun, then a folding one will work fine for you.

Mainly they’re best for people that are low on storage space or like to commute by bike. These products are extremely lightweight and compact. If you have a small apartment you can easily find a place to store it. You can put it in your closet, in your trunk, in the corner or even under you bed.

Also, if you live in a city you can take these kinds of bikes onto the subway and a bus. It won’t take up a bunch of room and it’s extremely easy to carry along.

Another group of people that will benefit from a folding bike is college students. You won’t have to leave your bike outside to get stolen and it’s small enough to fit right into your dorm.

4) Question: What are the top brands?

Answer: There’s a few brands that are more well known than others and I’d say the most popular is Dahon. This company has many bikes that’ll work for different people and this is the brand you’ll see most on this list.

They’re not the only ones worth buying, though. Other companies like Schwinn, Vilano, Ancheer and more are worth considering too.

It really comes down to your needs, though. For example, Dahon specializes in commuter bikes and are perfect for people that live in cities. If you’re looking for a folding mountain bike you’ll want to go with Montague or Stowabike or something like that.

If you want a product with motor in it you’ll want to look at Ancheer or Cyclamatic.

5) Question: What does the suspension do?

Answer: The suspension on a bike helps absorb bumps and shocks. If you get a bike made of alloy or aluminum it’s important to have a good suspension because those materials don’t absorb well.

But not everyone needs a high quality suspension. If you expect to ride on smooth roads, it’s not that important.

It’s rare to ride on perfect roads, though, and you’ll usually have to ride over cracks in the sidewalk, man hole covers and more. If you’re a mountain bike rider, you’ll be on trails with roots, rocks and divots. It can get a little bumpy and a good suspension will make it more comfortable to bike on these conditions.

There’s different kinds of suspensions too. More expensive bikes will have front and back suspension and this leads to the best ride possible. Mountain bikes can have a front suspension and not a back suspension. The reason for this is you get more pedaling power to the back wheel, which helps you get up hills easier.

Some bikes even give you full suspension but allows you to lock the back suspension when necessary. This way you can get your smooth ride and be able to climb inclines better.

6) Question: What size wheel should I get?

Answer: The size wheel you get or should get largely depends on your own needs and can range from 16 inches to 27.5 inches. Someone low on space will obviously want a smaller wheel and you can go as low as 16 inches. When you have a wheel like that it makes the bike ultra compact and you’l be able to store it anywhere. Also, you’ll be able to carry the bike onto public transportation easily too.

Larger wheels have their benefits too. When you get a tire that’s 20 inches or so it does a better job rolling over obstacles and this leads to a smoother ride. When you do 16 inches you’ll feel each bump a littler more.

In general, larger wheels are better for longer rides too. So if you bike for exercise or commute long distances, you’ll want to get a wide tire. Smaller tires tend to go a little faster, though.

7) Question: What should I know about gears?

Answer: Explaining the entire gear system can be a little complicated if you’re not familiar with all the terms but all you really need to know is this – the more gears you get, the easier it is to go up hills.

A lot of folding bikes are made for commuting so gears aren’t too important unless you live in a very hilly city like San Francisco. If you live in flat, urban area then you can get away with minimal gears; like 7 or 8. There’s even a couple available with only one gear.

If you’re looking to head off trail and do a little mountain biking, you’ll have to worry about more gears. In this case you’ll want to go as high as 20 or 21 gears. This makes getting up those steep inclines much easier.

8) Question: How far can I bike with one of these products?

Answer: Again, this really depends on the type that you get. Some bikes are designed for shorter trips and this shows in the suspension, the wheels and in your riding position. If you have a bike that’s made for short commutes, you won’t get the riding posture that’s made for a 75 mile trek. You’ll get a riding posture that’s designed to give you maximum visibility so you can see potential hazards like cars and people.

So if you’re looking to take long biking trips you need a product that’s designed for that. You need one with larger wheels (over 20 inches), a comfortable seat and one that let’s you get into a relaxed position.

Folding bikes that have a motor and ones that are made for mountain biking usually are designed for endurance and will help you go for as long as possible.

9) Question: How easy are these products to fold?

Answer: If a folding bike takes a long time to fold and is hard to do so, it kind of defeats the purpose of the product, right?

If you get a low quality product it may end up showing up when you go to store it away or hop onto to a subway with it. Imagine standing on the subway platform and desperately trying to fold up your bike so you can hop onto it. You don’t get much time. It has to be quick.

I made sure to only include bikes on this list that collapse easily and quickly. This way you won’t be stressing yourself out and you won’t miss your train.

10) Question: How much do these products typically weigh and which weight should I get?

Answer: Folding bikes that are made to commute are a lot less heavy than ones made for mountain biking and ones that come with a motor.

The main reason that commuter bikes weigh less because you don’t need as much performance. Speed may not be what you’re most worried about, you won’t need a product that’s designed to roll over large rocks and you won’t need all the bells and whistles of high performing bikes.

You just need something that’s comfortable and gets you from point a to point b. If you plan on hopping onto a bus or something like that, you’ll have to carry the bike with you too. In this case, it’s much better to have one that weighs less.

Also, lighter bikes tend to be more compact, which is the main selling point of a folding bike. If you’re short on space, you’ll want a bike that’s smaller and lighter. This way you can easily store it away.

If you’re a mountain biker, your needs are much different. You need a bike that’s more rugged and can handle a completely different terrain than a commuter bike. A folding mountain bike is going to have stronger materials, larger tires and a completely different design – it’s going to be in general just bigger too.

Because of this being lightweight isn’t as important.

11) Question: How often should I buy a new folding bike?

Answer: If you take steps to maintain your bike (which I’ll go over next) you’ll have to buy a new bike less often. But there’s going to be a time when you do have to get a new one.

How much your ride and the conditions that you ride on, determines how often you’ll need to get a new bike. If you’re someone that goes for a ride here or there, you’ll have your bike for much longer than someone that goes for miles and miles each and every day.

Also, if you ride in an area that’s well maintained (like a college campus) and you aren’t hitting bumps and rocks all the time, your bike will last longer. You’ll probably get years in this instance.

Others, who ride on rough terrain, will have to make a purchase more often and may have to every 12 to 18 months.

12) Question: What can I do to maintain my bike?

Answer: There’s many things you can do to ensure your bike is in tip top shape. One of the most important aspects of your bike is your tires and unless your tires are properly taken care of, you’re going to run into problems.

If your tires are low on air, you face a larger risk of flats. It’s a lot more expensive to pay for a new tire then to just fill it up with air every once in a while.

You’ll want to pay attention to the brakes as well. Give the brake levers a squeeze before riding and make sure they’re properly engaging. If they’re not, make sure to get them serviced or changed.

Lastly, you’ll want to take care of the chain too. You have to clean it and lubricate regularly. This will keep it working properly for as long as possible and prevent it from rusting.

13) Question: What should I know about the brakes?

Answer: Your brakes are obviously very important and when you have a quality set you’ll feel very safe and get great stopping power. If you get a low quality set you may run into some problems and injure yourself.

There’s basically two types of brakes you’ll find on folding bikes – disc brakes and rim brakes. Of the two, disc brakes are more popular and higher quality. They brake sharper and are better in slick conditions. Also, they don’t wear out your tire like rim brakes do. This saves you money over the long run.

Rim brakes main benefit is they’re easy to inspect so you know when it’s time to replace them.
