11 Best Ski And Snowboard Helmets For Kids 2021: Boys And Girls

Skiing and snowboarding is both exhilarating and fun – it comes with a few dangers, though.

The most important part of a child’s body to protect is their head. To do this you’ll want one of the best ski and snowboard helmets for kids.

In this post I’ll show you what to look for when making your selection and my top picks for both boys and girls.

Sound good?

How To Choose A Helmet For Your Kid

I’ve personally witnessed my friend concuss himself on the slopes and it was one of scariest things I’ve ever seen. He smashed his head against the mountain and I had to stop his lifeless body from sliding down the hill – of course he wasn’t wearing a helmet.

In order for your little one to protect their head sufficiently you’ll need high quality headgear. To do this consider the following:

  • Make sure to get the right size
  • Check out ventilation
  • Protection features
  • Look at smaller features (liner, construction, goggle compatibility)

The most important thing you’ll want to get right is the size of the helmet. If you go too big you run the risk of having it slide over your kid’s eyes (which isn’t good). This will obviously lead to less vision and will increase the likelihood of an accident.

On the flip side if you go too tight it’ll constrict and feel painful. This will make your boy or girl not want to wear their helmet at all.

Here’s a video that’ll help you properly size a helmet:

Not too complicated, right? You’ll be happy to know there’s many helmets that have adjustable size features. This means you can fine tune it to the exact size and shape of your child’s head.

Next, you’ll want to to look at the ventilation of the product. Vents are important because it increases air flow around your head and prevents overheating. Remember, the goal is to select a helmet your kid will want to wear. If it makes them sweat too much they’ll try and ditch it throughout the day.

After ventilation you’ll want to check out the protection the head gear provides. This actually isn’t as complicated as it sounds. Any quality helmet will guard against head injuries and all the helmets on this list are just that – high quality.

You’ll have to decide whether or not you want a MIPS helmet too.

A MIPS helmet protects against rotational forces meaning it slides when it makes contact with the ground. It’s debatable whether or not it really helps too much but it’s definitely worth considering.

Lastly, you’ll want to look at the smaller features that make up a helmet. You’ll want a liner that’s comfortable to wear, durable buckles that won’t break and whether or not it’s goggle compatible.

All the products on this list excel in each of these categories.

Now that you know what makes up a good helmet, let’s take a look at my top picks for the year now.

POC POCito Light

Company: POC

Price: $$$

Rating: 4.9/5

The first helmet on this list comes from a well known headgear company, POC. They make excellent products in many different sports including skiing, snowboarding, skating and biking.

Their POCito Light is one of my favorite pieces of equipment on the market. First off it sports a really nice design and it’s something your kid will actually want to wear. Also, it comes with a really convenient and awesome feature – the size is adjustable.

This means as your child’s head grows the helmet grows with it. You won’t have to buy a new helmet every year when your boy or girl grows. Also, this means you’ll get the perfect fit every time. It’ll never be too tight or too loose. Some other cool features include:

  • Comfortable and soft ear pads make this product lightweight; your kid will barely notice it on and won’t try and take it off because it’s uncomfortable.
  • Absorbs contact with its EPP Impact Foam and protects well. If your child takes a spill you can rest assured their head will be protected.
  • Goggle compatible which makes life easier. You won’t have to go out and buy a new pair of goggles to fit around this helmet.
  • Name tag so you can write an emergency number on it. This gives you a little peace of mind that if something happens you’ll be in the know.

This product isn’t cheap but it’s not overly expensive either. It comes in both orange and pink, that way you can choose one for your boy or girl.

Lastly, it has perfect reviews and if you’d like to check out what other customers are saying about the POCito, click below:

Smith Optics Pivot Junior

Company: Smith Optics

Price: $$

Rating: 4.8/5

Smith Optics is another company that’s well known in the helmet world – I own one of their mountain bike helmets. I’ve also rocked their products on the slopes before.

Their Pivot Junior is another helmet that I think every parent should consider for their kids. First off, it comes in a bunch of different colors so you’ll find one that your kid loves. You get to choose from green, purple, black, white and pink.

You’ll also like that it comes with:

  • Bombshell Plus construction offers maximum protection. Your little one’s head will be nice and safe with this helmet on.
  • EPP Liner adds additional protection
  • 13 different vents allows airflow to constantly be moving and their head won’t overheat. This makes life more enjoyable and ensures more comfort.
  • Adjustable fit so it doesn’t slide over you child’e eyes or squeeze their skull. No matter how big or small your kid’s head is they’ll get a fit that works well for them.
  • Removable goggle lock gives you the option of reducing weight. You don’t want a heavy helmet on your head and this prevents that.

Another plus is this product is affordable. You know what makes this price even better? It has a lifetime warranty!

This means you’ll only have to pay one time for a helmet and you’ll have it for life. You can hand it down from child to child. That makes the Pivot Junior one of the best values on this list.

Anon Youth Burner

Company: Burton

Price: $

Rating: 4.7/5

The Anon Youth Burner is an affordable product that’s good for skiers that like to take it fairly slow. If your child is a high performer and likes to cruise down black and double black diamonds or hit the parks, you’ll probably want something a little higher quality.

The Burner isn’t low quality, it just won’t protect the way some of the better helmets on this list will. One thing your boy or girl will love is this product is extremely light weight. This is handy because you don’t want headgear that weighs you down and feels annoying.

Some other top features include:

  • Boa adjustable fit system that’s easy to use and always gives a perfect fit. You want your headgear to fit like a glove and this ensures that’ll happen.
  • Ventilation system helps reduce moisture and keeps your kid’s head dry. You won’t have to worry about oversweating or overheating.
  • Fleece liner means it’ll feel comfortable all day long. Comfort is key when you’re skiing/snowboarding and very important to having fun.
  • Polycarbonate shell gives a good amount protection. If your kid takes a spill their head will be nice and safe.
  • Magnetic buckles are easy to strap on and off. When it’s time to take the helmet off, you and your child won’t be struggling to do so.

You’ll find this product in a ton of different designs and colors ranging from very girly to very masculine. No matter what style your child is trying to pull off this year they’ll find a Burner helmet they like.

Just make sure your little one’s skill level matches what this helmet can do.

Giro Crue MIPS

Company: Giro

Price: $

Rating: 4.8/5

This Giro Crue is another affordable helmet that’s best suited for beginner or intermediate skiers and snowboarders. This product is a MIPS product and this means your child gets extra protection when they fall. Instead of staying stiff when it hits the ground it slides with your kid’s head.

The Crue is another helmet that comes in a bunch of different colors. You can select pink, white, black, blue, orange and a bunch of other colors that work for boys and girls.

It also has:

  • A hardshell construction and EPS impact foam offer a good amount of protection. Head injuries can be very serious and these features prevent them from happening.
  • Auto Loc 2 system provides an adjustable fit which is extremely convenient. You need a good fit to be comfortable and the Auto Loc 2 makes sure you’ll get that.
  • Quality venting system keeps heads cool. If your child’s head gets too hot they’ll be tempted to ditch their helmet – this venting system won’t let things get too hot.
  • Comfortable ear pads provide additional warmth. This is another way this helmet is enjoyable to wear.
  • Compatible with goggles and works best with Giro goggles.

The Crue is one of the most affordable helmets on this list. Even though this product is inexpensive it’s doesn’t give up much in the performance department.

If your child is a very skilled skier or snowboarder you should probably go with one of the more expensive pieces of equipment on this list. If they don’t stray from green circles or blue squares too often this helmet will work just fine.

Anon Define

Company: Anon

Price: $$$

Rating: 4.9/5

Before you saw an Anon helmet that’s doesn’t really work for advanced skiers or snowboarders. That isn’t the case for the Define – it’ll protect the heads of every type of rider.

This is another piece of equipment that can be adjusted for a perfect fit. This is really helpful and it ensures the Define will rest comfortably without being too tight or too loose. Some other features you and your child will like include:

  • Classic fleece liner makes this helmet a pleasure to wear and adds some warmth. Staying warm is important to having a good day and this fleece will make that happen.
  • Good ventilation prevents overheating and sweating
  • Dual layer face foam gives maximum protection and prevents injuries
  • Compatible with goggles
  • Lightweight and won’t be overly heavy on your kid’s head
  • Multiple colors for both boys and girls

This product isn’t cheap but it’s not overly expensive either.

I personally believe this is one of the best looking helmets on this list too. To me, it has a sleek and cool design. That’s important because it’ll make your child want to wear it. They may even be excited to wear it.

This will give you peace of mind when your boy or girl is shredding down the slopes.

Smith Optics Gage Jr.

Company: Smith Optics

Price: $

Rating: 4.7/5

This is the second Smith Optics helmet on this list and this one, the Gage, is an affordable option best suited for beginners and intermediates. If your boy or girl is a skilled skier or snowboarder you may want one of the higher performing products.

The Gage comes in 10 different colors including pink, green, white, black, blue and more. You should have no problem finding a color that your kid loves and one that matches with their gear. It also comes with:

  • EPS impact foam will protect you child’s noggin
  • Adjusting Lifestyle Fit System ensures a comfortable fit
  • 12 different vents do a good job wicking away moisture and limiting sweat
  • Removable ear pads so you can lessen the weight
  • Certified by all major safety organizations

Despite all this, the Gage is pretty inexpensive. What makes this price even better is the fact it has a lifetime warranty too. You know a product is well made when it comes with that type of warranty.

This is another helmet that has a clean look to it too. This is a helmet a lot of kids will be proud to wear.

Marker Kent

Company: Marker

Price: $$

Rating: 4.8/5

The Marker Kent is cool looking. In my mind it’s one of the coolest designed helmets on the market and on this list. The Kent is the type of helmet that your kid is going to want to show off.

Looks really don’t matter, though, if it can’t protect right? Well, you’ll be happy to know this helmet does a good job protecting and works well for basically all skill levels of skiing and snowboarding (maybe the best of the best will want more). Some awesome features include:

  • RTS Youth Fit System gives you the option to easily adjust the fit with a dial
  • Removable ear pads allows your kid to shed some unwanted weight
  • Fleece lining is extremely comfortable to wear and is soft to the touch
  • Markair Channel System will prevent overheating and keep your boy or girls head cool
  • 1 year warranty and will likely last much longer than that

The price is very fair too and it wont break the bank. For everything you’re getting that’s a good price.

It comes in several different colors and you’ll be able to find one for both your boy and/or girl. This is a product that all parents should consider.

Giro Nine MIPS

Company: Giro

Price: $$

Rating: 4.8/5

The Giro Nine is a MIPS helmet and this feature gives you a little extra peace of mind that your kid will be protected. If your child happens to fall this product won’t be rigid and stay in place. It moves with the direction of the wipe out and this ensures more head safety.

It also means it’ll protect against impacts from all angles and directions. This helmet has one of the best venting systems and does an exceptional job preventing overheating and sweating. It also has:

  • Stack ventilation limits goggle fogging and this ensures more safety
  • In Foam fit system is extremely comfortable
  • Compatible with goggles which makes life much easier
  • Comes in several different colors that work for both boys and girls
  • Audio compatible means your child can sync up their tunes with a separate audio system

The vents can be opened and closed too so your kid gets the exact amount airflow they want and need.

This is another piece of equipment that’s a great value and well worth every penny. Giro is an excellent company and you can trust their helmets and products.

Smith Optics Junior Zoom

Company: Smith Optics

Price: $

Rating: 4.8/5

This helmet comes from a company you’ve seen a few times on this list – Smith Optics. They really are a premier helmet maker and their Junior Zoom is one of their cheaper products. I personally wouldn’t buy this if your kid hits the park regularly or likes to take on diamond trails – you’ll want something with a little more protection.

If, however, your child likes to take it slow and rarely goes beyond a blue square, this helmet will work just fine. The Junior Zoom comes in A LOT of different colors (17 to be exact). Basically any look you want you’ll be able to find. You’ll have an easy time getting one that matches your boy or girl’s jacket, or ski/snowboard. Some other nice features include:

  • Airevac 2 and Airflow Climate Control ensures your child won’t sweat too much or be too hot
  • Lightweight construction won’t slow your kid down or be uncomfortable
  • Easy to adjust with a dial ensures a perfect fit every time
  • Soft lining makes it a pleasure to wear

This helmet won’t cost a ton either. It gets even better when you consider it comes with a a lifetime warranty.

You’ll have a really hard time finding a cheaper helmet that offers so much and comes with that type of warranty, that’s for sure.

Lucky Bums Sports Helmet

Company: Lucky Bums

Price: $$

Rating: 4.7/5

This Lucky Bums helmet works best for a certain kind of athlete. I wouldn’t put this helmet on the heads of high performers. Any skilled skier or snowboarder is going to want something a little more protecting.

I personally would purchase this product if your kid is just learning or doesn’t venture onto to difficult trails too often. These types of skiers and snowboarders will get the most use out of this Lucky Bums Helmet. Some features they’ll like include:

  • Internal fabric is comfortable to wear and won’t be irritating at all
  • Lifetime warranty demonstrates how well made this product is
  • Antibacterial treatment limits bad smells
  • Allows for maximum airflow
  • Certified by many safety organizations

This is one of the cheaper helmets on this list. That’s a very good price for what you’re getting.

Also, It comes in 15 different colors which means you’ll easily be able to find one your girl and boy will like. Some colors you can purchase it in include: green, blue, black, white, red, pink and more.

Giro Launch

Company: Giro

Price: $

Rating: 4.7/5

Last on the list is the Giro Launch and this product comes in 25 different colors! I’ve said this a few times already about a few other helmets but it’s especially true here – you won’t have a hard time finding one that matches your kid’s jacket or ski/snowboard.

There’s even a helmet that looks like a shark and has a little fin too (there’s also one with a pink ribbon, blue mohawk and a pink cat). It also has:

  • Polycarbonate shell that does a good job protecting against all types of impacts
  • Super cool vents make sure you boy and girl won’t sweat too much
  • In Foam fit system ensures a snug and comfortable fit
